Warnings of ‘damaging’ 100km/h winds in NSW, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania

EXPECT cold, wet and very windy conditions across the nation’s southeast as winter continues to tighten its grip.

DAMAGING gusts of up to 100km/h could slam into four states today and tomorrow as Australia’s windy winter shows no sign of abating.

Parts of Victoria, South Australia, NSW and Tasmania are likely to be affected by the strong and cold gusts.

In Sydney, the blustery conditions have effectively dropped the temperature from a pleasant 15C to a far chillier feeling of 5C at lunchtime.

Sky News Weather’s Rob Sharpe said rolling cold fronts were ensuring winter kept a firm hold on the region.

“Hail is a chance across southeastern Australia as we have the remnants of a front moving through and another front on the way.”

In contrast to the parched and desperate conditions further north, across southern areas the fronts have brought rain and that pattern is showing no sign of stopping.

On Tuesday, the Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe weather warning for large parts of Victoria, including the Melbourne suburbs, Warrnambool and Ballarat, as well as Alpine regions.

“An active cold front will approach western Victoria later today before crossing the state during overnight and early Wednesday,” the bureau said.

“Damaging winds averaging 50 to 70km/h with peak gusts of 90 to 100km/h are possible overnight and early Wednesday morning in elevated areas.”

Winds of around 90km/h are to be expected in coastal areas.

Melbourne could see a few showers and highs of 15C on Tuesday.

A severe weather warning is also in place for parts of southeastern NSW for Tuesday afternoon, including Wollongong and Goulburn.

“Vigorous westerly winds are being experienced in the wake of a cold front, reinforced by a trough passing to the south today,” the bureau said.

“Winds of averaging 55 to 65km/h and with peak gusts reaching around 90km/h, are possible over.

A blustery Sydney has seen gusts of almost 70km/h on Tuesday morning at the airport and Penrith in the city’s west. A gust of 83km/h was recorded at Mt Boyce in the Blue Mountains.

While the temperature in the city was 15.2C at 11.30am, the chill winds brought the apparent or ‘feels like’ temperature down to just 5.7C.

It’s a similar situation in southeast South Australia with a severe weather warning in place for gusty winds in a stretch from Port Lincoln to Kangaroo Island and Mt Gambier. Showers could well hit a windy Adelaide.

Tasmania is also in the firing line with a severe weather warning for gusts of up to 100km/h across the north coast for late Tuesday and into Wednesday morning.

The best of the weather will be Brisbane which will see sun and 23C. But expect showers in Perth and a high of 18C. Darwin will reach 33C on a sunny day.
